On Tuesday, March 13, as part of our tour around the monuments restored using the funds from FHV supported projects, we visited Hartmanice. We met Eva Huikari there, the coordinator of programme and events organised by local Mountain Synagogue. The synagogue is about to open to public in 4 days. Apart from various cultural activities and events for schools, the synagogue offers permanent exhibits on coexistence of Czechs, Germans and Jewish people in Šumava region, on vanished villages of the region as well as permanent photographic exhibition portraying Šumava through historical photographs. About one kilometre away from Hartmanice, there is a Jewish cemetery. It was established in 1870. There have only remained a few tombstones at that cemetery till nowadays. In April 1945, 12 women, who died during the death march, were buried here in a mass grave. The grave is marked with a wooden memorial. We are aiming at installing an information panel for future visitors to this cemetery.
