Not even the high temperatures on Wednesday, July 2nd, could deter us from helping to clean up the Jewish cemetery in Mladá Boleslav. This cemetery, located on a fairly steep slope across from the local castle, is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Bohemia.
We focused on the oldest section, with tombstones dating back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Among those buried here is the prominent financier Jakob Baševi. Our work involved removing overgrown vegetation and cleaning moss-covered gravestones. At the end of the day, we were guided through the cemetery by Hebraist and historian Daniel Polakovič.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Building and Cemetery Administration of Matana a.s., to all the dedicated volunteers, and to the Foundation of the Jewish Community of Prague for their financial support.
