The Presidium of the International Auschwitz Committee met last week in Vienna under the leadership of its new President, Eva Umlauf, and Executive Vice President, Christoph Heubner. Together, we visited the new Holocaust memorial, where we were guided by Hannah Lessing, the Executive Director of the Nationalfonds der Republik Österreich für Opfer des Nationalsozialismus and a member of the Presidium. We also received an invitation to the Hofburg. In 2018, the International Auschwitz Committee honored the Austrian President, Alexander Van der Bellen, for his commitment to democracy and human rights. Although the President was unable to attend for health reasons, our meeting at the Hofburg remained of great significance despite his absence.
